Roster moves include Diaz to Sea Dogs
The Boston Red Sox made their first roster moves of spring training on Tuesday, sending 5 players to the minors.
Among the five, shortstop Argenis Diaz was optioned specifically to Double-A Portland.
The other four were assigned to the general minor league camp - pitchers Kris Johnson, Dustin Richardson and Charlie Zink and catcher Carlos Maldonado. All four were non-roster invitees to the major league camp.
Zink and Maldonado are going to begin the year with Triple-A Pawtucket.
Johnson and Richardson would appear headed to the Sea Dogs (especially Richardson, who is moving to the bullpen), but nothing is concrete.
The Red Sox also announced that they came to terms with the 19 unsigned players on the 40-man roster (all of them on one-year deals). These are the players that were not eligible for arbitration or free agency.
They include:
Pitchers Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Manny Delcarmen, Felix Doubront, Miguel Gonzalez, Devern Hansack, Hunter Jones, Jon Lester, Wes Littleton, Justin Masterson and Ramon Ramirez; catchers Dusty Brown, George Kottaras and Mark Wagner; infielders Chris Carter, Diaz, and Jed Lowrie; and outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Jonathan Van Every.
Lester, of course, if reportedly ready to sign a long-term deal with the Sox.
