A sampling
Two Red Sox exhibitions in one day, including a contest vs. college kids, meant playing time for minor leaguers on Wednesday.
Shortstop Yamaico Navarro enjoyed a fine day against Boston College, going 2-for-2 with a home run and double, and two RBI.
Navarro, 21, who had a solid 2008 in both Class A leagues, is expected to begin 2009 in advanced Class A ball. But he could push for time in Portland, likely when Sea Dogs shortstop Angel Diaz, is eventually moved to Navarro can play third base.
A bunch of former and present Sea Dogs got into the BC game - catcher Jeff Wagner (1-1), infielder Jeff Natale (0-1), and outfielders Jeff Corsaletti, Bryan Pritz and Bubba Bell (0-1).
Sea Dogs manager Arnie Beyeler reports that Bell, who suffered a stress fracture in his femur last season, is looking good. He also said outfield Jay Johnson, who went down last year with a ruptured Achilles tendon, is running at full speed.
Against BC, Josh Beckett pitched two perfect innings. Five pitchers followed him, each pitching one inning (it was a 7-inning game): Clay Buchholz (1 K), Junichi Tazawa (needing only 4 pitches), Kris Johnson (2H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 2 K), Felix Doubront (1H, 1K), and Daniel Bard (2H, 2 K).
Against the Twins Wednesday night, Diaz, first-baseman Lars Anderson, catcher Dusty Brown and outfielder Zach Daeges all went 0-for-1. Outfielder Josh Reddick was 0-for-2. Infielder Ryan Khoury walked.
