Tek needs a new agent
If NESN's Heidi Watney's report this morning is true, Jason Varitek needs a new agent.
According to Watney, Varitek did not know another team would have to surrender a first-round draft choice to sign him - after he declined arbitration from the Red Sox.
You got to be kidding.
I thought this Scott Boras was supposed to be the super agent. But doesn't an agent have the responsibility of spelling out EVERYTHING to his client?
By declining arbitration, Varitek gave up a one-year deal with Boston, which would probably be in the $10- to 11-million range.
Instead, Varitek is still not signed and it looks like Boston is the only team interested in him. And the Red Sox will likely get him for under $10-million.
Watney's report sounded like a plea for the Red Sox to sign him (I've had some emails questioning her objectivity).
Varitek is not the coveted commodity his agent advertised.
Still, it would be good if the captain returns to Boston, in a more limited role.
But the way Boras has botched this ... should he take a fee when Tek finally does sign?

Time to move on..........Tek is not worth anywhere near the 10 million dollar plateau. Boras misread the tea leaves. Tek can no longer hit, throw or stop errant throws.
Will Bard be the answer? Even temporarily? Theo needs to shore up the backstop position in the same manner he has shored up the pitching staff.
Lastly, why is NESN permitting Heidi Watney to report on matters involving Tek? Inquiring minds want to know the real story behind the story (if there is one). Can it really get lonely sitting at the bar at the Don Cesar in St. Pete?
If the story of Tek's divorce is true, why would he want a large contract? From anyone? Most of it would just go to his about to be x-wife.......I would suggest he take a page out of the Derek Lowe domestic financial advisory...wait a few years and then go for the large contract. But, alas,.......time marches on.....and Tek is not getting any younger. Maybe he can consider coaching the pitching staff?

Boras is only interested in Boras. If you can ethically collect a fee from someone you have screwed over than I guess he can justify it. Isn't everyone sick of Boras? We need Tek back.

If this is true, The Sox should sign Tek for 2 million and then he should sue Borass for the 8 mil difference (plus mental anguish).

Hello,
I have always felt that Mr.Boras has had a personal interest in this situation with Jason Varitek and with many others.I feel he really likes to work deals the way he wants them to go and his interest is with himself first and not with the player. He has inflated many player values over the years and his work has hurt the game of baseball as it has lined his pockets.I realize players use agents, but they also should keep a closer eye on the dealings. After all it is their money and their furture that they are intrusting to Mr.Boras or any agent. That being said todays game is only about baseball on the field.Otherwise it is about MONEY and that falls true from the batboy all the way to the owner. In closing I think a reality check is due for all involved and in this economy they may just get it.
Sincerely,
Dan A.

Time to move on. Tek has been good for Boston and Boston made him a millionaire.
He no longer can hit, he can't throw out base stealers.
The pitching staffs ERA went up. There is no upside to Tek.
Tek showed he just wanted the money when he refused to sign for $11 milllion.
Now is the right time for Boston to move on.
There is no future in having Tek as the Red Sox catcher. Baseball is big business and Tek gave Boston the reasons to move on.

Tek has caught more games than anyone in MLB history,he also caught 4 no-hits,won 2 Worls Series with the Sox,is a Golden Glover,Silver Slugger,Captain of the best team in baseball. If you have a problem with that, then you can never be satisfied.None of the kids out there can do his job, none of them have any significant playing time, and Tek should come back from a poor year at bat.His previous year in 2007 was good,he was batting after Lowell and was OK.Fisk had a slump year at age 36,and came back great,so can Tek.He is looking for a contract that would be for 3 years,Theo wanted one,so we will see what happens.Keep the Faith RSN,do not dispute the TEK.

Tek not knowing he was a type A free agent, or that it meant a team would need to surrender a draft pick by signing him has to be baloney. He's been in the game for a long time and should know that he was type A and should know what that means. It was only being reported everywhere. I mean, I was kind of shocked he was ratted type A (I was shocked he was rated at all) but a smart player knows his worth. A player who has been around a while knows why a team offers arbitration (Sox would not have bothered if not for the potential compensatory picks).
I love Tek. I have a Tek jersey and even a magnet of him on my fridge but if what Whatney is reporting is true then one must question the number of collisions he's had or something because that's just plain dumb.

Jason Varitek can still hit and he guides pitchers better than any catcher in MLB. He had an off year offensively. This happens even to the great(est) hitters including Ted Williams. It happened to Bob Boone and he came back with great numbers the following two years. Boone was
Varitek's age when he had an even worse offensive year than Jason did. Scott Boras is either incompetent or he misled Jason Varitek. Either way, I agree, it is time for Mr. varitek to send Boras packing and it is time for Jason Varitek to negotiate directly with the Red Sox himself!

It's time for Tek to take a true captains postition and say I'll take what you give me and return. We all know his skills are less but his knowlege of the game from a cathers view is one that many don't have and he can help the young pitchers that are here now and in the fyture. Tek will get less thanks to Boras, but hay as the saying goes you snews you lose, and in this case it's Tek that snewsed to long. But we still love him and want him back. Even if the price is around 5 to 8 Million, which to me is still alot of dough.

Veritek can not still hit and he hasnt for a couple of years now. If you look at his numbers, there has been a steady decline. He is starting to sound like McNabb. Please, as if he didnt know the Sox would get a pick from any team he signed with. Hopefully whatever he did with Heidi was worth it and that it is still working out for him. I am sure it was a lot of fun but not worth losing your marriage. I never heard what happend so i am basing my comments on others posts.

Let's see... Red Sox win 2007 World Series with Jason Varitek catching, and miss getting into 2008 World Series by 1 game with Jason Varitek catching. And now he's all done ? It's time to move on ? Who could we now get that would be better. You just don't realize what he means to this team and particularly the pitching staff. He doesn't have to hit or throw out baserunners. I don't think that he's finished. We need him and he'll be back this year.

I think Jason should tell Boras to just take a hike. Do his own negotiation. Jason is no dumby and would do ok on his own. He has already told John Henry that he wants to retire in Boston but would like more than a one year contract. Jason would be the perfect person to train his replacement. Then let me him become a coach for the Red Sox.

If Heidi Watney is correct, then that is a very grevious error on Boras' part, because it has a material impact on the negotiations. If he didn't know that any team would have to surrender a first round, then he wouldn't know that any offer he was to recieve would be calibrated lower for that reason. Do't hold your breath waiting for Tek to dump Boras, though. He seems to be a black hole.

Shame on Tek if he can't speak up for himself and has to use honey Heide as his spokesperson. Shame on Boras for making a fool out of Tek. Boras is only out for Boras... he could care less about the game of baseball or the individuals that he "represents". Just show him the money.

Fruitgirl says /Tek has caught more games than anyone in MLB history/
Not so. Tek would need over 200 more games to get into the top 20. Carleton Fisk is Number 1 catching 2226, almost twice Tek's number which is somewhere around 1300. Tek holds the record for most games caught for the Red Sox.

Poor Tek. He is njust awful from the left side with those hands held over his head and that sweep swing. Stick to right handed. Time to go -give the kids a chance, Kottaras, Brown,or Wagner-but not Montero. What's this Whatney thing all about?

I agree completely with Coach Thornhill's post. Don't give up on Tek yet- one bad season doesn't mean the end of a career. Also, as captain and mentor to the pitching squad we need his skills for a few more years yet, then sign him to a coaching role. As far as Whatney, fire her for unethical unprofessional conduct and sign someone who isn't being hired just for her T & A. Hazel Mae proved that a woman can be stunningly beautiful, bright, professional and still have great sports knowledge, wish she hadn't left!

I've said it before AND I'll say it again---I think the Sox--should esign Tek; he is the best catcher in the game, and if they can get another one that matches up to his knowledge of the game and his training of the pitchers, I would dearly love to see that guy--truth is, there isn't any---WAKE UP BOSTON---YOU ALREADY HAVE THE BEST!

It is easy to figure Boras out, Boras first and the client second. In doing so however he has brought some big paydays to a large number of players who certainly didn't deserve what they got. The thing that bothers me most with a guy like him is that he gets the big $$ from owner's who are greedy and pay the big tab and then nicely turn around and pass the foolishness on to the fans with a day at the game more than most can afford now with the economy or any time. Where is the cap in baseball, if the owner's and the players can't be sensible let's make them be.
Heidi Whatney, where is that coming from? Jason take control of your own situation like you did the last time leave Heidi and Scott out of it.

Varitek needs to sign. He may be on his last legs, but I wouldn't judge him based on 2008 season. He can tutor some of our young catchers and later become a Red Sox coach.
Posted by
The JolterJanuary 19, 2009 02:55 PM
I agree with Sarah. Boras's greed led him into malpractice. He thought that his hard-bargaining approach would work with a 37-year-old man with a slowing bat, whose only real remaining value is sort of as an on-field pitching coach. He can't hit very well any more, and his ability to throw out base stealers is only average.
Blowing the opportunity for arbitration cost Tek a load of money. He's going to wind up crawling back to the Sox for whatever they're willing to pay him. Boras should pay him the difference.

varitek is still a good catcher, i think. he is not good at throwing out baserunners, but that is his only flaw.i believe he will be much better hitting this year,(cant really get worse)the sox should offer him a contract like smoltz, 5 million, with incentives to get to 10 million. if you have never been through a divorce, then you would have no idea how much it can effect a person. lets give him the chance to lead the sox to the world series again this year.

Since Boras so totally screwed up the Varietk "issue" and no one else seems to want our Captain, let's just get him signed at what is deemed fair by the Sox and him without the interference from Boras. Varitek can tell him where to go.
Also, if rumors are true, why is Heidi Watney still covering the Sox for NESN?

I think that Jason Varitek is very valuable to the red sox as a team his moral boosting in the dugout is worth resigning him, his hitting yeah it was not that great last year as a matter of fact he struck out more than hit i think but so did manny last year!!!!!!!! Variteks knowledge of all the AL players in knowing what to pitch to them is so valuable.
