Youk signs extension, Aardsma designated, Hall traded
ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have signed Kevin Youklilis to a four-year contract worth $40-million, with an option for a fifth year.
Also, the Red Sox officially signed Mark Kotsay. To make room on the 40-man roster, reliever David Aardsma was designated for assignment.
In one more move, Boston announced that Sea Dogs outfielder Mickey Hall was sent to Cleveland, completing the trade made last August for pitcher Paul Byrd.
Aardsma, 27, appeared in 47 games for Boston last year, compiling a 5.55 ERA.
Hall, 23, a second-round draft pick in 2003, never really got going with the Sox. He was promoted mid-year to Portland, where he batted .232 with 13 home runs. He will be eligible for minor league free agency after the 2009 season.
The only players left with the Red Sox from the 2003 draft are closer Jonathan Papelbon (fourth round) and infielder Iggy Suarez (24th).
