Sox sign Saito
The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they have signed veteran relief pitcher Takashi Saito to a one-year contract with a club option for 2010.
It was thought that Saito, 38, might return to Japan after this past season with the Dodgers. But the Sox got him.
Saito went 4-4 with 18 saves and a 2.49 ERA in 45 appearances last year. He recorded 60 strikeout and 16 walks in 47 innings.
He spent about two months on the disabled list in 2008 (right elbow strain). He returned Sept. 13,
Boston's 40-man roster is back up to 40 players.
