Wagner, Hunter, Doubront added to 40-man

The Boston Red Sox added three players to their 40-man roster, including one former Sea Dog (left-handed reliever Hunter Jones) and one current Dog (catcher Mark Wagner), and Class A left-handed starter Felix Doubront.

By being on the 40-man roster, the players cannot be taken by another team in the upcoming Rule V draft.

Doubront, 21, pitched in both Lower A Greenville and Advanced A Lancaster last year, totaling a 13-9 record and 3.69 ERA. Expect him in Portland this year.

Jones, 24, began last season in Portland and finished with Triple-A Pawtucket. His totals: 7-3, 2.45 ERA, 76 strikeouts/18 walks in 48 games, with 12 saves.

Wagner, 24, faded at the end of last season. He hit .219 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 94 with the Sea Dogs. He is playing in the Arizona Fall League and is batting .296.

With the addition of Wagner, Boston has four catchers on its 40-man roster, and none of them are named Varitek.

Jason Varitek is a free agent as is another Sox catcher, David Ross. Other free agents include: Alex Cora, Sean Casey, Paul Byrd, Mark Kotsay, Bartolo Bolon, Curt Schilling and Mike Timlin. Only Varitek and Cora seem a possibility to return.

The addition of Doubront, Hunter and Wagner gives Boston 37 players on its roster. It has room for three more, which are likely to be filled by free agents and/or trades.

Here are the current 37:

PITCHERS (20): David Aardsma, Josh Beckett, Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Dewon Day, Manny Delcarmen, Felix Doubront, Devern Hansack, Hunter Jones, Jon Lester, Javier Lopez, Justin Masterson, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Okajima, Jonathan Papelbon, David Pauley, Ramon Ramirez, Virgil Vazquez, Tim Wakefield, Charlie Zink.

CATCHERS (4): Dusty Brown, Kevin Cash, George Kottaras, Mark Wagner.

INFIELDERS (8): Jeff Bailey, Argenis Diaz, Mike Lowell, Jed Lowrie, Julio Lugo, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis.

OUTFIELDERS (5): Jason Bay, Chris Carter, J.D. Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonathan Van Every.
