Checking the fall/winter leagues
Mark Wagner is batting .319 and a trio of relievers are looking strong in the various fall and winter leagues going on.
Wagner, who still may be considered the Red Sox best catching prospect (depending on your opinion of Luis Expositio), has rebounded from a slow start in the Arizona Fall league. He also has 3 home runs and 7 RBI in 15 games.
Outfielder Josh Reddick also had a tough start in the AFL, and is now batting .230 (3 HR, 12 RBI) in 18 games. Reddick is cold and hot. He recently went 7-for-16 in a four-game stretch, with two home runs.
Beau Vaughan gave up 6 earned runs in his first four appearances in the AFL. He has since thrown 7 straight scoreless outings, lowering his ERA to 3.52 ... T.J. Large has been solid in 10 games (2.35).
Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz is apparently done after his last start on Nov. 3. The Red Sox wanted Buchholz to get in more innings after his disappointing 2008 season. He pitched 21 innings in the AFL (1-2, 3.86).
Lefty Dustin Richardson, a Sea Dogs starting pitcher all season, has been used only in relief in the Hawaiian Winter League. He's doing well (12 games, 18 2/3 IP, 2.41, 26 K, 6 BB).
Also in Hawaii, outfielder Ryan Kalish is hitting .279 in 22 games. He could be in Portland sometime in 2009.
Other players are competing in leagues in the Dominican, Venezuela and Puerto Rico (which just started).
Catcher Dusty Brown is hitting .279 in 20 games in the Dominican.
