More baseball
Plenty of stories today on the Day After. In the Press Herald, we have thoughts from Tom Caron and yours truly and an AP report from the Fenway clubhouse, including words from Theo Epstein.
Among Epstein's comments was good news on Mike Lowell's hip surgery (an apparent success).
For another perspective on the Sox, read this piece from Jack Curry of the New York Times.
While the Red Sox are done, there is still baseball being played (and we're not talking the World Series). Here is a look at some of the Sox minor leaguers playing winter ball:
In the Hawaiian Winter League, two future Sea Dogs are playing in the field - outfielder Ryan Kalish (.275 in 12 games) and infielder Yamaico Navarro (.264 in 13 games). Kalish has 11 walks and a .431 on-base percentage.
Dustin Richardson is being used as a reliever (don't know if that is a new role or is just to keep Richardson's innings down). He has a 3.72 ERA in 9 2/3 innings (10 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 12 K) ... Jose Capellan, who pitched in low Class A this year, has started four gammes (12 IP, 23 H, 12 ER, 4 BB, 11 K).
In the Arizona Fall League, Clay Buchholz has started two games (8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K) ... Sea Dogs reliever T.J. Large also has a 0.00 ERA (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K).
Former Sea Dogs closer Beau Vaughn has pitched 6 innings (10 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) and Sea Dogs starter Ryne Lawson is being used in relief (2 2/3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 1 K).
First baseman Aaron Bates has played five games in Airzona (.286, 1 HR) ... outfielder Josh Reddick is hitting .206 (7-34) and catcher Mark Wagner is batting .200 (4-20).
Catcher Dusty Brown is playing in the Dominican Winter League, batting .350 (7-20) so far.
