Almost there
One more win and the Red Sox are in (the playoffs).
Josh Beckett is pitching his last "full" start tonight. He is scheduled to start again Saturday but, with the playoffs possibly beginning next Wednesday, Saturday's start is likely going to be an abbreviated outing at best.
Tonight, Beckett faces the Indians and left-handed starter Zach Jackson (0-3, 6.35), so the odds are great that the Red Sox will be popping corks tonight. Jackson, obtained from the Brewers in the Sabathia trade, was called up from the minors when the Indians traded (gave away) Paul Byrd to the Red Sox.
With the Indians throwing three left-handers over the next four days, look for Mike Lowell to get a DH assignment.
Here is a look at the AL contenders
Angels: 96-59
Rays: 92-62
Red Sox: 91-64
Yankees: 85-71
White Sox: 86-69
Twins: 84-72
The Rays are in Baltimore tonight. Tampa Bay is starting David Price, the top pick in the 2007 draft. Baltimore is going with Brian Bass (3-4, 5.15).
If Boston wins and Tampa Bay loses, the Red will be only a half-game back. Tampa Bay plays a doubleheader on Tuesday.
