Magic number to 5
Two walk-off games Tuesday night meant good news and bad news for the Boston Red Sox.
Victor Martinez's 3-run homer run in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Cleveland a 12-9 win over Minnesota, pushing the Twins one more game to elimination.
The Red Sox lead Minnesota by 7 games in the wild card standings, making Boston's magic number 5 to clinch a playoff berth.
But that is not what Red Sox fans are likely talking about today. Boston would have been leading the AL East Division, instead of the wild card standings, but the Rays beat Boston 2-1 on Dioner Navarro's RBI single in the 9th.
Navarro's hit came after Boston reliever Justin Masterson hit Cliff Floyd on an 0-2 pitch to load the bases with one out. That brought the outfield in. Navarro's "hit" would have been a deep fly-out to center had there been two outs.
It could have been a wonderful night for Boston because the Angels also lost, 8-1 to Oakland.
Here is a look at how they stand:
Angels: 92-58
Rays: 89-60
Red Sox: 89-62
White Sox: 84-66
Twins: 82-69
Blue Jays :80-71
Yankees: 80-71
Today's game features Tim Wakefield, whose knuckleball usually works well in the Rays' dome, and Tampa Bay's Matt Garza, who is pitching on three days' rest for the first time this year.
