Big Papi means no Moss
While everyone anticipates the return of David Ortiz to the Fenway Park batting box tonight against the Yankees, the activation of Ortiz meant someone had to go. So Brandon Moss is back in Pawtucket.
Moss batted .429 in July and his major league numbers sit at .295, 2 HR, 11 RBI. Not bad for a player who does not turn 25 until Sept. 16.
Moss may be playing his way to the fourth outfielder role next year. However, one thing against Moss is that he bats left, as does J.D. Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury. Assuming Crisp is gone next year, the Red Sox may want a right-handed batter as its fourth outfielder.
Speaking of Pawtucket, catcher Dusty Brown, 26, went 2-for-4 Thursday with his 10th home run. Brown is batting .278 (.378 OBP). The Red Sox are looking hard for catching next year. One assumes that Brown is on the radar.
Charlie Zink (12-3, 2.70) picked up the win Thursday, although the numbers were not great (6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K).
In Lancaster, the wind was blowing out to right again, but Zak Farkes' two home runs were to left. Farkes, 25, was once a catcher, but with Luis Esposito moved up, and Jon Still already there, Farkes is playing third. He's batting .275 with 8 home runs.
