Bowden, Corsaletti up; Anderson, Diaz coming
Right-handed pitcher Michael Bowden and outfielder Jeff Corsaletti have played their last games for the Portland Sea Dogs. They are going to Pawtucket after the All-Star break.
First baseman Lars Anderson and shortstop Argenis Diaz are coming to Portland from advanced Class A Lancaster. And outfielder Bryan Pritz is coming down from Pawtucket to Portland
The website soxprospects.com first reported the moves.
One unreported move is the likely promotion of 1B/DH Sandy Madera from Portland to Pawtucket.
Anderson and Aaron Bates are expected to share first base & DH duties, so Madera gets moved up.
The moves of Bowden and Corsaletti were expected. Both are in their second year in Double-A and both are ready to go. Corsaletti is 9-4 with a 2.33 ERA; Corsaletti is batting .311 with 12 home runs. Madera, signed out of the independent leagues, is batting .292.
Anderson's promotion has also been speculated. He got off to a slow start in Lancaster, but has since raised his average to .317 with 13 home runs.
Diaz, a defensive whiz, was placed on the 40-man roster to protect him after he starred in the Hawaii winter league (.358). He was batting .281 in Lancaster.
The move of Pritz, 26, was a surprise and was clearly made to provide a vacancy to Corsaletti. Pritz, who batted .292 last year in Portland, has been bothered most of the season with a sore shoulder. He was batting .264 in 28 games in Pawtucket.
One anticipated move had been the promotion of outfielder Josh Reddick to Portland but, for now, Reddick remains in Lancaster, where he is batting .353 with 15 home runs.
Reddick, 21, is a free swinger and has only 15 walks. That may be one reason why the Sox - with their mantra of "work the count" - are keeping him in Class A.
Speaking of promotions, don't look for 17-year-old third baseman Michael Almanzar to be jumping out of the Gulf Coast League too soon, even though he is batting .367 (3-for-4 Tuesday). One reason is his age, the other is that he has played only 20 games.
But a promotion to Lowell next month is not out of the question ... The last time the Red Sox has a teenage sensation from the Dominican tearing up the GCL was 18-year-old Hanley Ramirez in 2002. After batting .341 through 45 games, Ramirez was promoted to Lowell on Aug. 9. Ramirez was in Portland by the end of the 2004 season.
I'll check in later from the Eastern League All-Star Game.
