Bowden will not pitch in All-Star Game; 2 Dogs added

As expected, Portland Sea Dogs ace Michael Bowden will not be pitching in the Eastern League All-Star Game next Wednesday in Manchester, N.H. Bowden will appear at the game, but will not pitch.

Bowden's place on the Northern Division roster will be taken by Sea Dogs closer Beau Vaughan (12 saves, 2.56).

Also, Portland outfielder Zach Daeges (.295 avg., .421 on-base percentage) has been added to the roster, replacing Binghamton's Nick Evans, who was called up to the New York Mets.

Outfielders Bubba Bell and Jeff Corsaletti had already been named to the roster.

Bowden follows in the footsteps of other prospects named to the All-Stars, but who did not pitch:

Jonathan Papelbon was named to the 2005 game, but was promoted to Pawtucket before the game took place ... Jon Lester was also picked for the 2005 game. He dressed out but did not pitch ... Clay Buchholz was name to last year's game, and did not pitch.

Bowden is likely due for a short rest, anyway. If he stayed in the Portland rotation, his next start would be Monday, but the Sea Dogs game notes have Monday's starter listed as "TBA."

The speculation, of course, is that Bowden is headed to Pawtucket after the all-star break.

In other Sea Dogs news, Sea Dogs infielder Ryan Khoury was placed on the disabled list with a bruised foot. Khoury fouled a ball off his foot last Sunday and had been listed day to day.

Greenville infielder Kris Negron, (7th round pick, '06) was called up to Portland to fill in.

And, finally, here's the Red Sox lineup tonight:

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
Manny Ramirez, LF
Mike Lowell, 3B
Sean Casey, DH
Jason Varitek, C
Brandon Moss, RF
Julio Lugo, SS
(Clay Buchholz, P)
