Moss mashes 3 home runs
The park in Durham, N.C. features a 32-foot "Blue Monster" in left field, but Pawtucket's Brandon Moss went elsewhere to smack three home runs Saturday. Moss hit one to center and two to right field.
Chris Carter and Jon Van Every also went deep for the PawSox
Moss was an 8th round draft pick out of high school in 2002. The 2008 draft is coming up this Thursday.
For a look at the draft and some speculation on whom the Red Sox might pick, see today's column.
One more Pawtucket note: Clay Buchholz officially came off his major league rehab and was assigned to Pawtucket. No surprise there, especially with Bartolo Colon in fine form. (The big man gets today's start in Baltimore).
Buchholz pitched Friday and shows he needs to work on the command (4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 5 K).
It will be interesting to see how Justin Masterson does Tuesday at Fenway. If he has a third sold start, does he move ahead of Buchholz on the depth chart?
In Double-A, Portland's Bubba Bell remained hot (3-for-5, 9th HR) and Zach Daeges extedned his on-base streak to 30.
Some more old news from Friday:
Lancaster starter Chris Jones had 11 strikeouts in a win (6 2/3, 5 H, 1 BB) at Inland Empire. Think Jones likes pitching away from Lancaster? (7 earned runs in 5 road games; 22 earned runs in 5 home games).
Greenville reliever Bryce Cox (2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K) picked up his fourth save Friday.
