Homers, Schilling, and (no) Tavarez
Some quick notes for a lazy Saturday:
The Sea Dogs cracked five home runs at Hadlock Field Friday night, the most at their barn since 2003. The wind was blowing to right, but not that hard (12 m.p.h.). The sluggers were Jeff Corsaletti (2), Bubba Bell, Mark Wagner, and Andrew Pinckney
Report out of Oakland is that Curt Schilling's long toss program advanced to 140 feet, and Schilling even talked about stepping on a mound in a couple of weeks.
Also hearing word that Julian Tavarez is not going to report to Pawtucket. He apparently accepted the assignment to Triple-A originally because of terms in his contract. Anyway, he is a free agent.
Brandon Moss enjoyed a nice night of rehab with Pawtucket - 2-for-3, triple, sacrifice fly, 2 RBI.
Devern Hansack (2-5) got roughed up in his Pawtucket start (5 1/3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K). His ERA is now at 5.55 ... Two other former Dogs relieved - Jose Vaquedano (1 1/3, 1 H, 1 BB) and Edgar Martinez (2 IP, 1 H, 2 K).
Wondering who might be the next promotion to Portland. Reliever Blake Maxwell, a 40th-round pick in 2005 out of Methodist College, has a 2.43 ERA in 15 appearances in Lancaster. Maxwell has already endured one full season in Lancaster. Blake brings a presence to the mound (6-5, 255 pounds).
