Masterson better than it looked
Justin Masterson gave up 4 earned runs over 5 1/3 innings Monday night.
But don't think it was a bad outing. Masterson had his stuff working.
Through five innings, Masterson allowed only one hit and one walk, while striking out six.
He faced five batters in the sixth inning:
1. Single on a broken bat grounder that Masterson could not get to because he was dealing with a bat flying towards him.
2. Walk.
3. Two-run triple (Masterson's first mistake - a sinker that didn't sink)
4. Ground out.
5. Single on a ground ball up the middle.
Masterson left, with Portland trailing 3-1 with a runner on first.
Relief pitcher Daniel Haigwood walked three batters, forcing in another run.
Masterson's next start will be Saturday at Hadlock Field.
