Second inning more of the same

Masterson's second inning was almost identical. Torii Hunter flied out to center. Casey Kotchman grounded out. Maicer Izturis walked and Mike Napoli struck out on three pitches, swinging at an outside slider.

He threw 21 pitches, 13 for strikes. Total so far: 37/21.

Kotchman crushed a change-up foul of the Pesky Pole. What did Masterson do? he came back with another change-up, which Kotchman whiffed at.

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox—when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
