Portland envy

It is not a secret that the Manchester Fisher Cats would love to have the Red Sox affiliation.

You can't blame them. Watching Red Sox prospects come through Portland has been a blast.

But I don't know how to explain the recent story in the Manchester Union Leader.

Respected writer Allen Lessels wrote about the new Ted Williams Hitters Hall of Fame at the Fisher Cats' stadium.

Lessels, whose award-winning work once appeared in the Press Herald, and later in the Boston Globe, turned the story into shot at Portland.

Lessels writes: "Portland has the kids. ... Manchester has 'The Kid' ... Portland has the Red Sox prospects, mixed in with the may-never-make-its ... Manchester merely has the greatest hitter who ever lived."

Lessels ends the story with "Take that Portland."

I don't get it.

You don't think he's upset that the Fisher Cats and Toronto Blue Jays signed a FOUR-year extension of their Player Development Contract do you?

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox—when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
