Moss sent down
As expected, the Boston Red Sox sent outfielder Brandon Moss to Triple-A Pawtucket after today's game.
Moss, who hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Tuesday's season-opener, struck out three times Wednesday. Regardless of his performance, he was set to go back to Triple-A.
With Moss gone, either the Red Sox are sure J.D. Drew's back is going to be fine soon, or that they plan on moving Bobby Kielty onto the major league roster.
The move leaves Boston with five outfielders in big league camp - Manny Ramirez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Coco Crisp, Drew and Kielty.
It is unlikely that Boston keeps five outfielders so either Crisp is traded or Kielty is sent to Triple-A (or released if he does not accept the move).
Kielty is valuable because he gives Boston a right-handed bat off the bench (Kielty is a switch hitter but hits lefties especially well). Did you notice that left-handed Sean Casey pinch-hit for the lefty Moss Wednesday, against lefty Alan Embree?
With Moss in Triple-A, Pawtucket has four pure outfielders (Moss, Jon Van Every, Bryan Pritz and Rich Thompson) and three others who can play infield and outfield (Joe Thurston, Chris Carter and Jeff Bailey).
It's likely one or two will get cut or sent to Portland (Maybe Pritz returns to the Sea Dogs?).
Moss will also be getting time at first base.
