Damon irreplaceable?
Just read this quote from Johnny Damon in the Boston Herald:
“I still think I’m a pretty tough person to replace,” Damon said. “I think I’ve been pretty consistent throughout my career - I’m walking into Year 14, and I’ve had two bad years, a couple of OKs and a couple of really good ones. I didn’t have much in the tank last year, but I think time will only tell with Boston."
Damon has had a solid career. But of course he can be replaced in center field - because it's a position he can no longer play.
Does he honestly think anyone in Boston regrets that he signed with the Yankees?
Craig Hansen pitched a scoreless inning against the Yankees, and then was sent to the minors. Hansen said he had a good spring, despite allowing seven hits, six walks and seven runs over seven innings.
Manager Terry Francona hopes Hansen will follow the footsteps of Manny Delcarmen and mature into a major leaguer.
The jury, as they say, is still out.
A few minor league infield notes: Zack Borowiak, a Sea Dogs utility infielder the past two years, never made it to camp. He retired and has gone back to school ... Shortstop prospect Oscar Tejeda has been out of spring training with an infection.
With Tejada being held back, it may affect the shortstop pecking order and keep another prospect, Argeniz Diaz, in advanced Class A. Diaz, only 21, is on the 40-man roster, leading to speculation that he may jump from low Class A last year to Portland.
Diaz will be in Portland this year, but probably not at the start. Be prepared to be dazzled by his glove.
