Dice-K's wife delivers

The eagerly-awaited buundle has arrived.

Daisuke Matsuzaka's wife delivered a baby boy this morning (6 pounds, 10 ounces) at 7:30 p.m.

The boy, whose name was not released, is the couple's second child.

The birth clears the way for Matsuzaka to join the Red Sox in their trip to Japan.

Matsuzaka, who is scheduled to pitch the final exhibition game in Florida next Wednesday, would be on target to start the season opener on March 25, in Tokyo, vs. the A's.

The Red Sox have not announced their starting pitchers for Japan. Matsuzaka seems obvious. The second starter, for Marcvh 26, could be Jon Lester. Earlier today, Tim Wakefield said he was told he was going to pitch the second exhibition game in Japan (on March 23).

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox—when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
