Bartolo Colon? Why not?

Sorry for the lack of blogs. Call it techincal difficulty (although many technical items are difficult for me).

Seems the Sox have signed pitcher Bartolo Colon. To that, I give a rousing "why not?" What do the Sox have to lose in signing a non-guaranteed, low-money contract with a once-great pitcher?

Colon, of course, won the Cy Young in 2005, and has been injured ever since. His abbreviated 2007 season with the Angels featured a 6-8 record and 6.24 ERA.

Colon has had shoulder and elbow trouble. His fastball is supposedly gone. But, who knows, maybe he can re-invent himself and be of some use.

If not? No harm.

Remember 2005 when the Sox signed Wade Miller, a once-successful pitcher who had shoulder trouble in 2005? The Sox, with a thin pitching staff, needed Miller to come around. He never did.

In 2008, the rotation is set, even without Curt Schilling. Any contribution from Colon would be a bonus. Why not bring him in?

while i agree with the "why not", this signing reminds me of when they signed gagne. He was just coming off injuries and see what happened. The Red Sox just need to be able to know when to shut him down. Also, the only contrbution Wade Miller had was winning Game 5 vs. Trenton for the Sea Dogs.

The Red Sox gave up three players for Gagne and thought they would need him.
There is absolutely no risk in signing Colon.
Kudos for your memory of the 2005 Eastern League Divisional playoffs.

Sure why not. As long as we're at it, is Matt Clement still available?
