Is Epstein the best?
Is Theo Epstein the best general manager in baseball?
Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated thinks so. He ranks the top 10 GM's and puts young Mr. Epstein at the top.
There are two reasons to agree with Heyman. One is results - two World Series titles in four years.
The other reason is this 2008 team. The Red Sox did little in the off-season, but are still considered the team to beat. That says something about the organization that Epstein and his crew have built.
Of course, Epstein is the first to admit that money helps. It brings in accomplished veterans, it helps cover up mistakes (Matt Clement), and enables teams to be patient with others (J.D. Drew, Julio Lugo).
But Epstein has also poured money into drafting, signing and developing players.
Portland Sea Dogs fans, who have seen Papelbon, Pedroia, Ellsbury and Buchholz pass through recently can attest to the depth of the organization.
So, yes, maybe Epstein is No. 1.
As for Terry Francona? He may handle a team like this as well as anyone. That said, why is it taking so long to re-negotiate his contract? Should be a no-brainer.
