Schilling shelved. Now what?
With the news that Curt Schilling is not ready to pitch (and may not be in 2008) because of shoulder problems, where does that leave the Red Sox?
Just fine ... if Clay Buchholz comes through.
But the Red Sox were probably more comfortable with the veteran Schilling around, while having the developing Buchholz as a luxury. He could be summoned from Pawtucket when needed.
Relying on rookie pitchers for a whole season is not the best way to go (which is what the Yankees will be doing with Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy).
Throw in Jon Lester, who has not yet pitched a full season, and the Red Sox rotation has some questions. The talent is there, for sure.
Having Buchholz as the sixth pitcher also was reassuring with 41-year-old Tim Wakefield around. If Wakefield went down (as he has the past two season), then bring on Buchholz.
Now who is the "sixth starter." Back to Julian Tavarez? How about David Pauley (called up in 2006, but anchored in Pawtucket all last year)? Maybe Devern Hansack remains a starter in Pawtucket, just in case.
Interesting. You didn't think the Red Sox were going to fly through spring training without any issues, did you?
