Kielty coming aboard
Just finished my Sunday story, previewing the start of spring training. In it, I mention the lack of a back-up right fielder. To cover myself, I mentioned that the Sox could still re-sign Bobby Kielty.
Now a little re-write is in order since reports are coming in that Kielty has agreed to a minor league deal with Boston.
Kielty's signing can be viewed in a few ways.
1. He becomes the option for the fourth outfielder if Coco Crisp is traded.
2. He becomes the No. 5 outfielder (but the immediate back-up to left-handed batter J.D. Drew in right field, especially when a tough lefty is on the mound)
3. He goes to Pawtucket and is called up if needed.
Option 2 seems likely, but a fifth outfielder is a luxury, and means the Red Sox can carry only 11 pitchers (that is where Eric Hinske was valuable, being able to play both first base and the outfield).
