Report: Red Sox sign Casey
The Boston Red Sox have signed first-baseman Sean Casey, according to ESPN's Peter Gammons.
The report said that Casey, 33, signed a one-year contract for $700,000,
Casey batted .296 last year with the Tigers, with 4 home runs and 54 RBI, in 143 games (453 at-bats).
The signing gives the Red Sox a left-handed bat off the bench. And Casey plays first when Kevin Youkilis needs a break, or when Youkilis is playing third, giving Mike Lowell a break.
The Red Sox everyday roster is almost set, depending on if the Red Sox go for a fifth outfielder (Bobby Kielty?), or figure Brandon Moss is a phone call away in Pawtucket.
