Catching crowd
With Doug Mirabelli reportedly re-signing with the Red Sox, the organization now has five catchers at the major league and Triple-A level.
Who plays where?
Jason Varitek seems to have a job. We know where the Captain will be.
Is Mirabelli a guarantee? He is signing for about $500,000, so he could be waived if he is completely ineffective (unlikely).
George Kottaras, the prospect obtained in the David Wells trade, is coming off a disappointing 2007. Either Boston gives him more time, or he is traded.
Dusty Brown, the Sea Dogs catcher the past two seasons, just joined the 40-man roster. He will be in Pawtucket as the Red Sox see if his bat can equal his obvious defensive skills.
Kevin Cash, the Triple-A catcher with major league experience, is back, but on a minor league contract. He provides insuranced, but where to put him?
Injuries may play a factor here. It's possible, Cash, Kottaras and Brown are all assigned to Pawtucket as the Red Sox sort this out.
