Waiting day

The Red Sox have today off (although some of the fellas will reportedly be taking batting practice at Fenway; namely the sore Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis).

While they wait for those two to get healthy, Boston also will wait to see if its lead in the AL East is cut to one game, or expanded to two. The New York Yankees take on the Blue Jays this afternoon.

Expected starter Roger Clemens has again been pushed back because of a sore hamstring.

That means Andy Pettitte moves into today's role. With the Yankees having a day off last week, Pettitte is still going on four days' rest. And it is good news for New York. Pettitte is the Yankees' most reliable pitcher and has allowed 5 earned runs in 20 innings in his three starts against Toronto.

The Blue Jays have their own stopper going. A.J. Burnett is 1-0 against the Yankees in two starts (0.60 ERA).

In another game to watch, the Angels play at Texas. Currently, the Angels and Red Sox are tied for the second best record in the AL (half-game behind Cleveland).

Texas has Armando Galarraga making his first major league start, but the Angels have "road kill" Ervin Santana throwing. Santana is 6-4 in Anaheim, but 1-9 on the road.

Here are the standings and remaining games:

Cleveland 92-63
Boston 92-64
Angels 92-64
Yankees 90-65

Boston and the Angels have 6 games to go; Cleveland and New York 7 games.
