Sox on their way

When the Yankees closed to four games behind the Red Sox, you could sense the return of the New England angst over their team. People talked about history and curses and all that.

I usually answered with one word: Pitching.

While I do not pretend to guarantee anything in baseball, I have learned from those in the know that one ingredient is especially needed for winning baseball: pitching.

Remember the 2004 team. Martinez, Schilling, Wakefield, Arroyo and Lowe. They did not miss starts. They usually pitched late into games, saving the bullpen.

While there is a lot of talk over the runs scored by Boston in Chicago, it may have been more of a result of the White Sox horrible bullpen and inconsistent starters.

Boston's pitching has held up.

The Yankees' pitching has not.

Take a look at the story by George King: in the New York Post.

Now, here's hoping the Sea Dogs get a boost from the pitching of Jon Lester tonight.

Down here in NY the Yankee fans are all over Mussina (who is signed for another year for about $11 million) on talk radio. The Yanks have implied that if he doesn't pitch good tonight he might be replaced in the bullpen by Kei Igawa, who already has been shippped to the minors twice this season.

Amen to pitching, indeed. The Sox have the real potential of two 20-game winners (Beckett and Wakefield...they'd have three if we ever gave Daisuke any run support). Schilling will win more often than not (although his time is nearing), and throw in the young arms (Buckholz, Lester), and you've got an embarassment of riches. And, hey, talk radio nitwits, howsabout laying off of Julian Tavarez? We didn't bring him in to be an ace, or to win 20; he's flexible, giving you a fifth starter (whose going to win ten games and win more than he loses), and is completely humble about coming in in long relief or any other role the team has for him. He's crafty, and he'll give you all he's got. As for the bully, don't worry about Gagne; he's a good pitcher and will turn it around. And Papelbon and Okajima....forget about it.
