Run Support
Josh Beckett is pitching for the Red Sox tonight, in Chicago against White Sox left-hander John Danks (6-11, 5.30 ERA). Sounds like trouble for the Boston 9.
The glaring concern for the Boston Red Sox continues to be a lineup that fails to score runs. Ask Daisuke Matsuzaka about it. He threw a two-hitter over six innings and lost Wednesday night to the Devil Rays, 2-1 (so the Yankees are back to five games behind after beating the Angels).
In the past three months, he has given up three runs or less in 12 starts.
His record in thos starts: 5-5.
Devil Rays starter Edwin Jackson (4-12, 5.49) gave up five hits, five walks and one hit-batter over six innings. Boston got one run.
Think the Red Sox could have borrowed some runs from the Texas Rangers? They beat the Baltimore Orioles 30-3 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep. Now that's run support.
Former Sea Dogs and Red Sox lefty Kason Gabbard enjoyed the backing, going six innings (7 hits, 3 runs). Gabbard is now 6-1 with a 3.64 ERA,
Outfielder David Murphy, another ex-Dog and ex-Sox, went 5-for-7 in the first game and 1-for-1 in the second. He's batting .571 (12-for-21) since being traded to Texas.
Over in Pawtucket, Clay Buchholz made his first start since his major league debut last week. He gave up 4 hits and 3 runs in three innings, and was pulled after only 63 innings.
Sounds like Buchholz is on a tight pitch count, saving him for September.
