Roster moves & Yankees

Theo Epstein mused that the Red Sox broke the record for most roster moves in a day. Meanwhile, another move - a change in the pitching rotation - could be made with the Yankees in mind.

As for the roster moves:
1. Pitcher Clay Buchholz replaced outfielder Wily Mo Pena, who was traded to Washington.

2. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury replaced Buchholz for Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader.

3. Catcher Kevin Cash was called up from Pawtucket and placed on both the 40-man roster and the major league roster, replacing Doug Mirabelli, who went on the disabled list with a strained calf muscle.

4. While Ellsbury started in place of Coco Crisp Friday night, he is expected to be replaced by outfielder Bobby Kielty, Pena's true replacement as a right-handed hitting (he's actually a switch hitter) back-up outfielder.

As for the other pitching moves. The Red Sox will tinker with the rotation and plan to start Julian Tavarez Sunday, pushing Tim Wakefield back to Monday, where he will pitch against the Devil Rays, a team that he dominates.

That would push Jon Lester to Tuesday, and Daisuke Matsuzaka for Wednesday. If that rotation holds through next week, the Red Sox will be lined up for the series at Yankee Stadium, Aug. 28-30, with Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling.

The next roster change they need is to send Eric Gagne back to where he came from!

Schilling and Gagne...what a great couple of "deadline pickups."

Theo is very good at his job, unlike Francona. The choke sox have good pitching and the yankees have good hitting, so it will be interesting to see what develops. I think good hitting will beat good pitching, and these yankees will make them throw a lot of their pitches early. I'm oibviously not a red sox fan, but this is the best team that they have ever fielded. Will it be enough? Will september continue to haunt them? Stay tuned.
