Buchholz wins, Ellsbury leads off
As Clay Buchholz continued with his interviews in the Red Sox clubhouse (Sports Illustrated was on deck), Jacoby Ellsbury sat across the room, hurrying to put on his red socks.
Busy day for recent Sea Dogs.
Buchholz finished his Major League debut after six innings, with the Red Sox leading 7-4. Boston won 8-4 (birthday boy Dustin Pedroia added a homer). Buchholz's line: 8 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 5 strikeouts and 3 walks.
"Oh, you can see that he has got great stuff," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Meanwhile, Ellsbury will replace Buchholz on the roster and will bat lead-off in Game 2 (giving the recently-sick Coco Crisp a rest).
Also, Pawtucket catcher Kevin Cash is reportedly on his way (from Ottawa) to replace the injured Doug Mirabelli (strained calf muscle). No announcement has been made.
Jason Varitek, who replaced Mirabelli in the second inning, will catch Game 2. Catching both games of a DH is rare.
"It's been a while," Varitek said of his last double-duty. He smiled. "I think it was in Puerto Rico (in the winter league) in '97."
