Murphy, Bates promoted
David Murphy made it back to the major leagues Friday night, as a Texas Ranger.
Aaron Bates will be the latest prospect donning a Sea Dogs uniform.
And, um, about that trade for Mr. Gagne ...
We have just a few things to cover before heading to Fenway.
The Texas Rangers called up David Muprhy Friday. He entered the game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement and did not bat. Murphy has had a dizzying time lately. Traded on July 31 in the Eric Gagne deal, celebrating the birth of his first child, a daughter, Madison, on August 3. And now he's back in the bigs.
It was obvious that Murphy was not going to be in the Red Sox plans, but one scout at Hadlock Field said Friday, "I don't see him as a fourth outfielder. He can play every day."
Of course, Murphy played for the Sea Dogs in 2005, and part of '06, one of the many recent prospects to come through Hadlock Field. The latest is Bates, the first-baseman who was a third-round pick last year. The Red Sox are giving him a taste of Double-A ball (he should make his debut today at Fenway). He will surely be the Sea Dogs first baseman next year.
Speaking of former Sea Dogs prospects, Jed Lowrie went 3-for-5 for Pawtucket last night and is batting .324. Jacoby Ellsbury (.289) went 2-for-5.
In the game, newly-acquired outfielder Bobby Kielty (a.k.a. Wily Mo Pena's replacement) went 2-for-5 with a homer.
Outfielder Brandon Moss is back in Pawtucket, but he made an impress with his three days with Boston.ion
"He's really developing the reputation as a good young hitter," manager Terry Francona is quoted to say on the Red Sox website. "He stands up there like a good hitter. His at-bats the whole week were solid."
As for the Red Sox game last night, it's too early to judge Gagne. But it's not like the bullpen was a mess before he arrived. If I remember, Manny Delcarmen was giving the Red Sox some pretty good innings as a right-handed set-up guy.
