All Stars, zzzzzz

Missed a couple of blogging days because of my son's college summer orientation in Baltimore (Loyola). My son received his schedule for the fall and I got a nifty cap with a Greyhound on it. All it cost was $45,000.

Exciting All Star Game last night and none of the fans in my family saw it. My 6-year-old, Aidan, loves the game, but MLB and Fox TV have decided they don't want young fans by starting the game so late (yeah, I'll be griping about the World Series, too).

I remember gathering around with my friends, trading a few baseball cards (because it was fun, not because it was an investment), and watching the All Stars.

My 10-year Keegan likes baseball, but does not love it. With the game so late, he passed. Once, a few years ago, he desperately wanted to watch the game but was told it was too late.

My 18-year-old and I listened to the game on the radio, driving away from the airport. We then watched a few innings, but then it was time for him to leave with friends for the new Harry Potter movie. And, frankly, I wish I had a ticket.

I watched the game but, being wiped out from orientation, I fell asleep before the end.

Some of the game was thrilling, especially Ichiro's inside-the-park home run. But the game should have been earlier. Baseball is losing fans, especially young ones. It doesn't care as long as the TV check is good.

Why submit such a poorly written piece to the Press Herald? Proofreading would help greatly.

If my beloved journalism teacher from high school had not passed on, I would swear that last comment was from her. To the point and accurate. My apologies for the typos. I actually corrected some of those mistakes, but then punched the wrong button to save it. Thanks for your note. It brought it back to my attention.

I fell asleep as well. I missed all but the bottom of the ninth. Your writing is fine.....someone obviously has way too much time on their hands with a red pen !
My deceased English teacher was upset when a broadcast school made me lose my Maine accent. Tell the story like it is being told around a campfire....ignore THE INSENSITIVE PEOPLE with their thoughtless comments.

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox—when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
