Murphy or Moss to the Red Sox?
Before the Red Sox call up a pitcher to replace Curt Schilling, it looks like they will bring up an outfielder today from Pawtucket.
The outfielder, likely David Murphy (but possibly Brandon Moss) would play until Tuesday, when the Sox will need another starter.
According to the Providence journal, "rumors began swirling" during the Pawsox game that either Murphy or Moss would get called up.
“I haven’t gotten confirmation yet and it probably won’t come till (Friday),” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson told the Journal. " I really can’t get into who it is. I know there’s probably going be a move.”
The Boston Herald reported that it would likely be Murphy.
While Moss is having the better offensive year (.298, 12 home runs and 50 RBI), Murphy (.283, 5, 32) is playing well and is the better outfielder (i.e. as a defensive replacement).
Murphy received a September call-up to Boston last year, while Moss has yet to reach the majors. Jacoby Ellsbury, by the way, is not on the 40-man roster. If the Red Sox promoted him, they would have to put someone on waivers.
Meanwhile, Pawtucket starter Kason Gabbard made a case for himself to be Schilling's replacement Tuesday. He pitched well last night (6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts).
In last night's game, reliever Craig Hansen continued to struggle, allowing three hits (two solo homre runs) and a walk in one inning. His ERA sits at 5.68.
One final note: Ellsbury and Sea Dogs starter Clay Buchholz were named to the Futures Game on July 8 in San Francisco (part of the major league All-Star Game events). Previously, Hanley Ramirez (2005) and Kevin Youkilis ('03) played in the game.
