What's wrong with Schilling?
Reading the accounts of Curt Schilling's latest outing makes you wonder if he is not headed to the disabled list.
Schilling gave up 6 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings last night. He reportedly threw in the mid-80's range. When asked about his health. Schilling said, "It's not one thing."
With that statement comes plenty of warning bells.
Schilling is normally direct with his answers. If his health was fine, he'd say so. He didn't say so.
Schilling almost threw a no-hitter on June 7. Instead of it being a sign that the 40-year-old is still atop his game, it was a rare solid appearance of late
In his last eight starts, Schilling has gone less than six innings four times. He has allowed 4 or more earned runs in five of his last eight starts.
Check out his evolving ERA. In April: 3.27. May: 4.03. June: 5.79.
Even if health is a minor issue, maybe a stint on the DL would help.
Jon Lester appears close to being ready for a call-up. If the Red Sox want Lester more fine-tuned, then Kason Gabbard or Devern Hansack could be options. Gabbard did just fine in his one major league game this year (beating the Braves), while Hansack is looking good in Triple-A (6 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk, 2 earned runs, 6 strikeouts in Monday's start).
