Akron Aeros pitcher Jeff Stevens throws a pitch behind Portland Sea Dogs batter Jay Johnson. Is Sea Dogs manager Arnie Beyeler mad? No. He applauded the pitch.
"They did the right thing," Beyeler said of pitch in the direction of Johnson.
For details, see the game story in the Maine Sunday Telegram. But here are a few details. Sea Dogs reliever Lincolnd Holdzkom gave up a grand slam in Saturday's game. His next pitch sailed toward the head of an Aeros batter. To put it obviously, the pitch was not appreciated by Akron.
In the bottom of the seventh, Stevens threw toward Johnson.
Beyeler expected the pitch. And even though there was a benches-clearing incident later, Beyeler expects no more trouble today.
"It was handled," he said. "The game takes care of itself. And it's done. We move on."
Elsewhere in the Red Sox minor leagues, George Kottaras had his second walk-off home run for Pawtucket Saturday ... Leadoff hitter Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
In Class A Greenville, 2006 first-round draft pick Daniel Bard pitched five innings (3 hits, 2 walks, 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts).
I am hurrying with this blog because I want to get home and go to bed. A Father's Day breakfast awaits in the morning.
