Quick look at the minors
You have heard of Brandon Moss, and are probably aware of pitching prospect Micahel Bowden. But who is Bubba Bell?
Bell is one of the Red Sox minor leaguers who put in a solid April to start the 2007 season. Bell plays in advanced Class A in Lancaster, CA, and is batting .382 with 8 home runs and 33 RBI. Bell was not considered a fast-track prospect, considering he was a 39th-round draft pick in 2005, out of Nichols State.
Hard to make sense of the batting stats in the California League, which is known as a hitters' paradise. Eight Lancaster players are batting over .300.
That makes Bowden's numbers all the more impressive. He is 1-0 for Lancaster, with a 2.33 ERA (28 strikeouts/7 walks in 27 innings).
In lower Class A, 19-year-old Lars Anderson made an impressive pro debut in April, for Greenville in the South Atlantic League. A first baseman, Anderson hit .314 with two home runs and 11 RBI.
Greenville has an impressive closer by the name of Papelbon. Joshua Papelbon, Jonathan's younger brother, is 1-0 with five saves and a 2.19 ERA.
In Triple-A Pawtucket, Moss, the former Sea Dogs outfielder, leads the team in hitting (.316), home runs (4) and RBI (13).
