Lots of pitching
With the theory that you can never have too much pitching, Triple-A Pawtucket has a roster filled with starting pitchers, which makes you wonder if some of them might get bumped down to Portland.
Currently, Pawtucket has at least six starters, along with Jon Lester, who is expected to join Triple-A, once his rehab stint is over. Of those six, three are 40-man roster guys - Kason Gabbard, Devern Hansack & David Pauley. The other three are Abe Alvarez, Chris Smith and Charlie Zink. It is possible one or two of them could be sent to Portland. I doubt if Alvarez would come, since he has not pitched in Double-A since 2004.
Two AAA-level pitchers would give Portland a strong rotation, along with Clay Buchholz, Tommy Hottovy and Andrew Dobies.
By the way, Buchholz is pitching today in the major league spring training game (check future blogs and, of course, Friday's Press Herald).
And while I'm speculating, the addition of outfielder Cory Keylor could shake up the Sea Dogs roster. Keylor, who just came over from the Orioles in a trade for catcher Alberto Castillo, should be in the Portland lineup, along with other starters, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jeff Corsaletti.
