Dice-K wildly effective
Daisuke Matsuzaka did not want to meet with the media after his performance Monday. Who can blame him. All he did was give up zero hits over 5 innings.
There is a little more to the story. Dice-K was wild, allowing one walk per inning. Yes, Red Sox fans want the big-money pitcher to show more command. Still, he never got into serious trouble.
"If he struggles on a day when he gives up no hits in five innings, I think that's a testament to his ability to make pitches in certain counts," Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell said.
Bad day for former Sea Dogs reliever Craig Hansen. He arrived in the seventh and retired only two batters, while allowing two hits, two walks, two hit-batters and all five earned runs of the game.
Kyle Snyder looked good (one hit, two strikeouts in 1 1/3). Assuming he makes the team, still trying to figure out who that last reliever will be.
