Coco speaks

Coco Crisp went 1-for-2 with a walk, single and run scored today, his first game since having to rest a sore shoulder. Crisp is coming off a so-so year (.264 batting average), in part because of a broken finger. There may be pressure for him to do much better. But he says he is not concerned with others' opinions.

"I don’t care what people think. I just go out there, play and have fun. I hope people enjoy watching me. As far as me racking my brain about what anybody thinks, I don’t do that. I hope they enjoy watching us play as a team. I don’t care if people think I (stink) or they think I’m good.

If they think I’m good, thank you. If they think I (stink), then thank you anyway. I don’t really care. I just go out there and play hard, have fun and try to do my job. Hopefully, I do well at it."

Kevin covers baseball for the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. He first reported on spring training games for the St. Petersburg Times in 1978. He wisely moved to Maine in 1994 and now writes about the Portland Sea Dogs and Boston Red Sox—when he's not coaching Little League baseball.

He is married to Nancy, and the couple recently completed their lineup card with the birth of their ninth child.
