Download and use the database

If you have a spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel, you can download, view and do your own calculations on the database that was prepared for this series.

This database of over 500 occupations was compiled using information from the Maine Department of Labor and the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. It contains most of the occupations in Maine along with estimates of employment and hourly wages. It also has the predominant skill level found in each occupation. In a few cases, there was no employment estimate for a certain occupation during a given year. In such cases a "0" was put in the record.

If you have some experience using spreadsheets, you can sort occupations by wage and education, for example. The database is best used for tracking overall trends.

One of the following will work with most spreadsheet programs. Click on the highlighted words, wait for the file to load into your Netscape screen, then go into the "File" menu and choose "Save." Choose where you want to store the file, and note that location. Start your spreadsheet program, then "open" the file:

Download The Rich and Poor database in comma-delimited spreadsheet format.

Download The Rich and Poor database in plain-text spreadsheet format.

If you have America Online, or if you get an error on the above versions, try this version of the comma-delimited format. Be sure to name or rename the file "data.csv", so your spreadsheet program will recognize the format.
