Alcohol contributes to hundreds of deaths of Maine people each year. The
following is a selected listing of deaths from fires, accidents, motor vehicle
crashes and suicides from 1992.
In each of the fatal fires, alcohol played a role in either causing the fire
or preventing victims from escaping their burning homes.
FIRES
- May 7, 1992
- Roland Morrow, 46, fell asleep while smoking a cigarette in the back of his
friend's van in Fort Fairfield. The vehicle caught fire and Morrow died of
smoke inhalation. His blood-alcohol level was 0.35 percent.
- Oct. 9, 1992
- In Mapleton, 38-year-old Gregory Allan Beaulieu fell asleep on the couch while
he was cooking late one Friday night. He woke up to find his apartment filled
with smoke. He attempted to open a window but was overcome by smoke and died.
His blood-alcohol level: 0.27 percent.
- Nov. 28, 1992
- Charles Grinnell Jr., 29, died in his mobile home in Milo after a smoldering
cigarette ignited an overstuffed chair in the living room. The fire began about
5:30 a.m. Grinnell was found in his bedroom and died of smoke inhalation. His
blood-alcohol level was 0.23 percent.
ACCIDENTS
These are among the 1992 victims with the highest blood-alcohol content:
- A 23-year-old man died from alcohol poisoning and choking in Newport on Dec. 6.
His blood-alcohol level was 0.50 percent.
- A 27-year-old woman choked on food in Portland on Aug. 5. Her blood-alcohol
level was 0.43 percent.
- A 33-year-old man choked on alcohol in Sanford on Oct. 10. His blood-alcohol
level was 0.42 percent.
- A 36-year-old man died from hypothermia at a camp in Weston on Jan. 20. His
blood-alcohol level was 0.37 percent.
- A 59-year-old man died from hypothermia in his truck in Bremen on March 1. His
blood-alcohol level was 0.36 percent.
- A 46-year old man died in a van fire in Fort Fairfield on May 6. His
blood-alcohol level was 0.35 percent.
- A 48-year-old man died after falling down stairs in his Saco home on June 1.
His blood-alcohol level was 0.35 percent.
- A 50-year-old man died from injuries he sustained after falling down stairs in
his Gardiner home on Sept. 5. His blood-alcohol level was 0.34 percent.
MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS
These are the 1992 victims with the highest blood-alcohol content:
- A 53-year-old man died after driving his car into a tree in Arrowsic on June 6.
His blood-alcohol level was 0.36 percent.
- A 34-year-old man died after driving his car into a tree in Hartland on July
13. His blood-alcohol level was 0.36 percent.
- A 44-year-old woman died after driving her car into a utility pole in Portland
on Dec. 19. Her blood-alcohol level was 0.31 percent.
- A 26-year-old man died after the pickup he was driving collided with another
truck in Township 17, Range 5 in Aroostook County on Aug. 10. His blood-alcohol
level was 0.31 percent.
- A 39-year-old man died after driving his car into a utility pole in Boothbay
Harbor on Sept. 9. His blood-alcohol level was 0.31 percent.
- A 36-year-old man died when his car collided with another car in Fairfield on
Jan. 31. His blood-alcohol level was 0.31 percent.
- A 67-year-old man died after driving his car into a building in Westbrook on
Jan. 8. His blood-alcohol level was 0.28 percent.
- A 53-year-old man was hit by a car as he was walking in Portland on June 7.
His blood-alcohol level was 0.28 percent.
SUICIDES
These are among the 1992 victims with the highest blood-alcohol content:
- A 49-year-old woman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Gorham on Sept.
1. Her blood-alcohol level was 0.40 percent.
- A 48-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Aurora on March
29. His blood-alcohol level was 0.32 percent.
- A 46-year-old man suffered hypothermia and drowned in Auburn on April 8. His
blood-alcohol level was 0.32 percent.
- A 42-year-old man hanged himself in Hancock on June 11. His blood-alcohol
level was 0.29 percent.
- A 24-year-old shot himself in Van Buren on Feb. 23. His blood-alcohol level
was 0.28 percent.
- A 35-year-old man hanged himself in Westbrook on May 10. His blood-alcohol
level was 0.23 percent.
- A 40-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Millinocket on
May 13. His blood-alcohol level was 0.23 percent.
- A 72-year-old man shot himself in West Gray on Feb. 15. His blood-alcohol
level was 0.20 percent.
