Waterboro vote rejects a charter commission
By , Staff report Maine Sunday Telegram Sunday, April 22, 2007

WATERBORO - Residents of this rapidly growing York County town voted at their annual town meeting not to form a charter commission that could have led to the hiring of a town manager.
Turnout for Saturday's meeting at Massabesic High School was light, with only about 65 or 70 residents attending, according to Selectman Jon Gale.
Waterboro has about 7,680 residents, up from 4,510 in the 1990 census. The population surge has led to growth in the town government, but residents chose Saturday not to review their governmental structure, just three years after the last charter commission met.
"I don't think people are quite ready to give up the small-town system of government," Gale said.
Residents did approve a measure to allow contract zoning - or zoning that is specific to one particular project or site - which could help shape Waterboro's future growth.
In elections for two seats on the Board of Selectmen, incumbent Dwayne Woodsome was defeated, as Dennis Abbott and Tammy Jo Girard received more votes.
