FARMINGDALE: Voters juggle funds to repair old fence
Voters at the town meeting Saturday set priorities and did some fancy juggling of funds.
They shifted $20,000 the selectmen had recommended for the town's capital improvement account to a warrant article that recommended $3,500 for maintenance of the vacant Sheldon Street school.
Before they were done, an additional $15,000 had been raised to repair the school fence. The deed for the 6-acre parcel requires that the town maintain the fence, which is in disrepair.
"If you want something done with that property, we need the money," Selectman Eugene Proulx said after much debate about the fence funds.
The Capital Needs Committee is looking at options for the school property. Selectmen have considered moving the Town Office there.
Residents on Saturday also increased salaries for the Town Office staff, giving Town Clerk Phyllis Weeks a $7,000 raise and Deputy Town Clerk Deborah Barry a $5,500 raise. In 2006, Weeks' salary was $32,642 and Barry's was $26,876.
Residents reduced a street sweeping and cleaning contract from $49,770 to $45,000 and killed a $36,377 request for a Park Street project to relieve drainage problems. They authorized up to $100,000 for construction of a fire station on Litchfield Road.
In elections Friday, Rickey Mckenna won the selectman's race with 357 votes. Lynn Cayford received 204 votes and Deborah Caldwell, 73. Edward Rowe Jr. won the road commissioner's job, 360-272, defeatingİAlbert "Tony" Barry.İThomas Austin won an uncontested race for the School Administrative District 16 board of directors.
