NOBLEBORO: Town OKs funds to help academy
Maine Sunday Telegram Sunday, March 25, 2007

Nobleboro's annual town meeting got off to a bit of a rough start when a powerful winter storm knocked out power to the Nobleboro Central School last week (March 17).

But voters reconvened on Monday (March 19) and authorized spending, by a 58-37 vote, up to $30,000 to help Lincoln Academy pay for building renovation and construction projects.

The semi-private high school can not access state funds for capitol improvement which forces the school to rely on outside funding. Nearly all of Nobleboro's high school age students attend Lincoln Academy, which is based in Newcastle.

Town Clerk Mary Ellen Anderson said Deborah Wilson defeated Richard Gaeth by a 102-35 margin in the only contested race for a seat on the Board of Selectmen. Wilson will replace Stan Waltz who stepped down to serve as the town's Code Enforcement Officer.

Voters authorized spending up to $15,500 to revert to a library card system that allows the town to keep track of which residents use the Skidompha Library in Damariscotta. Anderson said the card system was disbanded a few years ago, but after library charges to the town started to increase, officials recommended going back to the card system.
