POWNAL: Bond approved for roads in 'disarray'

About 115 residents at Saturday's town meeting approved a $1.18 million bond to repair and rebuild roads.
Selectman Matthew Allen said the bond passed by an overwhelming majority.
"We've got a lot of roads that are in disarray," Allen said. "We are a small town with a small tax base. It's good for the town, and we will have better roads because of it."
Residents also approved a $300,000 bond for a new firetruck to replace their 1979 truck. "It's in tender shape," Allen said. "The biggest issue is that it needs to be custom built to fit our small fire station."
Voters approved an estimated $1.02 million municipal budget. Town Clerk Kelly Wentworth said the budget represents a slight decrease from last year's budget.
All but one budget item passed. Voters rejected a proposal to spend $8,000 for an AmeriCorps position.
Residents voted to raise $45,000 for the highway department, $1,500 to maintain cemeteries and $116,594 for the road commissioner and equipment operators.
In the race for the selectman's seat, Timothy Giddinge received the overwhelming majority with 179 votes; Donald Arnold, 69; and Alfred Fauver, 84. Allen, a first-year selectman, said the meeting went well.
"You have the people that get upset and people that are really happy that things passed," Allen said. "I do enjoy the process, allowing the town to have a say in where the money goes. If you show up, you have a say."
