The Board of Selectmen remained unchanged after municipal elections held Friday.
The decision closely paralleled the vote on an ordinance to regulate the commercial burning of commercial and demolition debris, which passed, 160-104.
First Selectman Bruce Clavette defeated challenger Marie Scott, 157-101. Charles Rotondi prevailed against Travis Thompson, 159-101 in the race for second selectman. Third Selectman Guy Anton defeated Fire Chief Jamie Stafford, 190-70.
On Saturday, residents who gathered at Athens Elementary School approved a $365,378 municipal budget, compared to the $383,352 approved a year ago. Voters agreed that the town should override provisional state limits on spending growth.
Clavette said that the spending cap was unnecessary because the municipal budget lowered the tax burden by $19,821. "We're below, not above," Clavette said.
Resident Richard Linkletter said the decision to override the state limits could be made at a special town meeting.
"We could do it if we needed it," Linkletter said.
Earlier, Clavette assured residents that the town will take a more aggressive approach to collecting unpaid property taxes.
