Strong: Declining state aid forces spending up
Staff report Maine Sunday Telegram Sunday, March 4, 2007

An expected drop in state revenue forced voters at Saturday's annual town meeting to increase tax appropriations 20 percent to run the town in 2007.
Fixed costs, such as insurance, employee raises, payroll taxes and road maintenance, have increased, town officials said.Ý
But many of the more costly projects have been completed or funded, requiring significantly fewer dollars to be set aside for those purposes.
Selectmen and the Budget Committee hoped to keep the property tax commitment to $93,077, but voters agreed to raise $111,973.
A proposal to create an ethics committee to oversee boards and committees was tabled by the person who proposed it, Town Clerk Eunice Shurtleff said.
During Friday's elections, Shurtleff lost her re-election bid to Lois Barker, who received 69 of 147 votes in a three-way race.
