Ripley: Voters use surplus to lower tax rate
Staff report Maine Sunday Telegram Sunday, March 4, 2007

Voters were in an approving mood Saturday, moving through 32 warrant articles without rejecting any during the course of a two-hour meeting.
In voting, Selectman Thomas Dyson was re-elected, and Vernal Sinclair was re-elected as town clerk, tax collector and excise tax collector, according to Sinclair.
All nominations took place from the floor. Voting was by secret ballot.
Voters also approved a plan to take $35,000 out of surplus to keep the tax rate down. Sinclair said selectmen estimate the tax rate will be about $13 per $1,000 of property valuation.
Voters also approved taking back the Courser Memorial School building if a new School Administrative District 46 elementary school is built.
The proposed school will be voted on at the end of the month. If it is approved, the town expects the district to give Ripley the Courser Memorial School when construction is complete, in 2010.
The town already holds selectmen's meetings in the building. Sinclair said the building could become the town office.
